Deacon Horace Ezell was born in Tuskegee, Alabama September 19, 1931 to the parentage of Dennis Ezell and Louise Borders. He was the eldest of 7 children, followed by Juanita, Mary, Calvester, Dennis, Windell and Winfield. He completed his education through grade 10 at the Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama. After leaving high school he enlisted in the US Army. Following his duty in the Army, he moved to Orlando, Florida along with his Father. A few years later, the rest of the family followed.
Deacon Ezell worked with the Civil Defense where he learned to be prompt, and prepared. He later was employed by the City of Orlando and retired after years of service. Time was important to him, and he was never late and was immaculately dressed. He took very seriously his duty to his beloved St. John Missionary Baptist Church. Pastors Fred L. Maxwell and Dr. Roulous Frazier could depend on him without fail. He would be sharply dressed in white to usher and for communion or black for any other occasion. Deacon Ezell was a fixture at St. John during services keeping watch over the parking lot! He would clean the sanctuary or complete minor maintenance around the facility.
Deacon Ezell married the former Shirley Hamlet Richardson and gained four children Darla, Alec, James and Patrick, in 1978. They were married until her demise in 2009.
In his later years my aunt, Loyce, aided in his care helping him to keep doctor’s appointments and making health decisions. Deacon Lockett and Deacon Wilson were faithful friends for many years providing a ride or a helping hand.
Deacon Ezell is survived by his brothers, Dennis and Winfield, his stepchildren, Darla (Ernest), Alec, and James. He will always be remembered by his Sister in law, Loyce Hamlet, Brother in law, Herman Hamlet and his nieces, nephews, friends and the St. John family.
