Marcus Anthony Sawyer

On November 2, 1968, Marcus Anthony Sawyer was born to Jacqueline Hopkins and Horace James Sawyer, both deceased. Marcus graduated from Pinellas Park High School in St. Petersburg, FL. He later joined the Marines for a brief time before returning to St. Petersburg. Marcus spent a great deal of time with his Godmother, Gloria Hansberry and her son, his cousin/brother Rodney Hopkins. Ms. Gloria loved Marcus. She treated him just as her own son and Marcus knew he had to stay in line because the main boss, his mother Jackie, was just a phone call away.

Marcus was loved by many. He was the oldest of his siblings and spending time with them  meant the world to him. That infectious laugh put smiles on a lot of faces not to mention when he would begin to sing....

Marcus was preceded in death by his parents, Jacqueline Hopkins and Horace James Sawyer, Grandparents: Edward Lee Sawyer, Willie Hopkins Sr. and Helen Hopkins. Four Uncles: Donald Hopkins, Nelson Hopkins, Willie Hopkins Jr, and Elester Hopkins. Two Aunts: Gertha Hopkins and Deborah Hopkins.

On August 20, 2024, after struggling a few years from diabetes and heart failure, Marcus passed away peacefully in his sleep, enroute to eternity. He was 55 years young.

Marcus is survived by his Grandmother Albula (Sawyer) Buckman, Citrus Springs, FL., Godmother Gloria Hansberry, St. Petersburg, FL., Brothers: Michael Sawyer of Tampa Fl, Steve Bunyan, Daniel Sawyer, Karim Sawyer, and his special cousin/brother Rodney Hopkins, All of St. Petersburg, FL., Sisters: Katrina Sawyer, Atlanta, GA, Alstelaundra Sawyer, St. Petersburg, FL, and Hannah Black, Savannah, GA.  

Uncles: Presiding Elder Theodore (Angelia) Hopkins Crystal River, FL., Saleem Sawyer of Beverly Hills, FL., Gregory Sawyer (Iris) of Virginia Beach, VA, Douglas Sawyer (Sabrina) of Inverness, FL, Apostle Steven Sawyer (Clovis) of Pine Ridge, FL, Jerry Sawyer, Sr. of Crystal River, FL, and Michael Sawyer, Sr. of Columbia, SC.

Aunts: Erma Hopkins of Spring Hill, FL., Anita Owens of Zephyrhills, FL., Kenisher (Sawyer) Edwards and Arelene Sawyer of Crystal River, FL., Carustella (Sawyer) Glass of Citrus Springs, FL, Vicki Sawyer-Lindo (Hersell) of Ocala, FL., and Cheryl (Sawyer) Cooper of VA.

Marcus also is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and long time friends.
This much loved grandson, nephew, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend will be truly missed.
