Mother Mae Washington Obituary

Mae Ella Washington, affectionately known as “Mother, Granny, Ma, Maepie, GG and Big Ma”, was born on December 25, 1939, in Allendale, SC to Beatman and Evelyn “Daisy” Frazier. Mae was the 2nd born of 5 siblings. During her younger years, Mae attended Allendale County Schools in South Carolina, along with her other siblings and some younger aunts and uncles that also resided in the home.

In her young adult-middle aged years, Mae met Booker T. Reid, later re-named Washington. The two wed in 1964 and never divorced. Mae and Booker migrated to Delaware and then to New Jersey to start a life together. In those years, Mae, 3 of her siblings and other friends of the family formulated a gospel group named “The Little Rock Gospel Singers”. The group travelled near and far singing songs of Zion and was able to be opening acts for legendary gospel groups such as Tommie Edison and the Five Singing Stars and The Williams Brothers.

In 1990, Mae moved to Florida, where she met the Legendary and late Elder I. Wells, joined New Jerusalem Church of God, Twin Lake and was led under her leadership until 2017. Shortly after, Mae joined New Jerusalem Church of God, Brooksville, under the leadership of Pastor Marvin Myers, where she diligently served as a Mother in the church and was extremely faithful, until her health started to somewhat fail. She then moved in with her granddaughter, Tysheeca, who loved, cared for and nurtured her until the day of her transition. Mae also fellowshipped along with her granddaughter, Tysheeca, at Second Chance Divine Ministries, Inc. where the church family grew to love her very much.

On Sunday, February 1, 2026, God saw fit to call Mae’s name and to Him, she peacefully surrendered. Mae was preceded in death by her son, Brooker Washington, husband, Booker T. Washington and siblings Catherine Williams, Eugenia Wilson, Charles Frazier and Beatman Ann Reynolds.

She leaves to cherish the love she exuded: a devoted, loving caretaker and granddaughter, Tysheeca Washington, one son, Arther Frazier (Debbie) and two daughters, Lila Smith (John, Jr.) and Anna Bryant. Nine grandchildren: Chris King, Arthur Clinton (Carinthia), Deanna Smith (Terrance, Jr.), Brookia Kee, John Washington, LoWanda Smith, Gregory Smith, John Smith, III and Galvin Smith. Two honorary grandchildren: Chris Sanders, Sr. and Melissa Mobley. Thirty-six great-grandchildren, Twenty-two great-great-grandchildren and five godchildren: Tonda Wells-Wilbur, Marcus Wells, Sr., Randi Stokes, Carla Davis and Desiree Davis. One sister-in-law: Betty Perry, two brother-in-laws: George Perry and Robert Perry. A very special extended family: The Wells family. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and sorrowing friends.
