Rev. Dr. Bobbie J. Cromartie Obituary
Pioneer. Educator. Author. Advocate. Mother. Sister. Daughter. Aunt. Friend. Singer. Songwriter. Explorer. Of the many roles she operated in, her life was exemplary of the constant changes that many of us experience in life. But, most of all, interwoven through her many roles and responsibilities is her love for and relationship with Yeshua, whom she came to know at the age of 17 in 1962. For Him, she lived. In Him, she died. And, one day, she will be raised together in eternal life with Him. In this eternal promise we maintain hope, even as we weep because of the loss of her physical presence.
Rev. Dr. Bobbie J. Cromartie graduated from Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, Fl, as an honor student (1963). She received her BA from Florida A&M University (1968), and MA in French, from Clark University (a.ka. Clark-Atlanta University) in 1972.
After completing her Master’s Degree in French, she began her teaching career at Edison Middle School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, teaching French, where she met and married her former husband the Rev. Dr. Robert “Bobby” Fulton. Their union was soon blessed with the birth of her two daughters, Wendy and Sunny.
Bobbie went on to earn her Ph.D. in Instruction and Supervision from the University of Pittsburgh (1981). Bobbie or Barbara Jean, as many affectionately called her, was the oldest of 6 siblings. She spent her early years as a church musician, playing the piano, singing, conducting and training up choirs serving many ministries located in Greensboro, FL, Tallahassee, FL, and Harrisburg, PA, just to name a few.
Bobbie was ordained a Baptist minister, under the guidance and tutelage of Rev. J. V. A. Winsett, Senior Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, PA. Here, she grew in her calling to serve the Lord, speaking, teaching, and preaching at over 500 locations worldwide. While at Ebenezer, she sang in the choir, served as the Director of Education, and eventually was trained up and installed to be the first African-American female pastor, ordained to lead the church ministry of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in the Hill District area of Pittsburgh, PA (1999).
Dr. Cromartie, under the guise of Wen-Sun and Associates, developed and published various curriculums, What’s Behind the Mask (Be Angry; Yet In Control), People Who Love Too Much (What Does Love Have To Do With It), which she utilized in the community-at-large to bring hope and healing to families, individuals, social service agencies, schools, businesses, and churches through counseling and education. Many people, to this day, are grateful for how she used her painful life experiences to draw them closer to Jesus, the Healer, the Redeemer, and forever Faithful Friend. Many lives were transformed and minds renewed as individuals employed the techniques and strategies taught to them by Dr. Cromartie or “Dr. C,” as some affectionately called her.
Bobbie was also the author and creator of the Wen-Sun Awards Music Ministry. Here she used her love for music and musical gifts to share her life, and open doors for others to grow in and share their musical gifts with the world. The theme of her life was based on the scripture passage of 2 Peter 3: 18 (KJV), “But grow in the grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever.” This passage became the theme of her 2nd Album: His Grace Let’s Me Grow.
Bobbie is survived by her two daughters: Wendy Brown (Michael), and Sunny Fulton. Her sister Christene Yant (James), brother Earl Cromartie (Toni), her granddaughter Mykenzie, Nephews: Chris, Darius, Sherrod, Terry, Anthony, Matteus, Dana, and her niece Jenelle. Also, a host of great nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Lou Donaldson, her brothers: Ulysses and Charles, her sister Mary, and her nephew Darryl.
